Putrajaya is a city built almost entirely around the assumption that you arrived by car. Eight-lane boulevards, generous roundabouts, parking everywhere. For 364 days a year that assumption holds. On 31/08/2026 it collapses completely, and the authorities have helpfully made the decision for you by closing five of the bridges you would need to get in.
This year's National Day celebration is at Dataran Putrajaya, with around 80,000 visitors expected and 2,357 police officers and personnel deployed. The theme is "Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati". The practical headline is simpler: drive and you will spend Merdeka morning in a queue.
What is actually happening, and where
There are two separate events across two nights, in two cities, and they get conflated constantly.
30/08/2026 — Kuala Lumpur. The 69th Merdeka Celebration at Dataran Merdeka, with fireworks and a planned drone show at Kuala Lumpur Tower. Police will run traffic control around Dataran Merdeka, KLCC and Sunway Velocity.
31/08/2026 — Putrajaya. The 69th National Day Celebration at Dataran Putrajaya, in the morning.
If you want the parade, that is Putrajaya on the 31st. If you want the countdown and the fireworks, that is KL on the eve of the 30th. Attempting both in one night is a plan that only works if you are not driving between them. The official listing for the national programme sits on Tourism Malaysia's National Day page.
Five bridges shut, two stay open
Putrajaya's Core Island is exactly what it sounds like — the government and ceremonial heart of the city, reachable only by bridge. Police have confirmed a closure of that area from 5am on 30/08 until 6pm on 31/08.
Closed during that period:
- Seri Wawasan Bridge
- Seri Saujana Bridge
- Seri Gemilang Bridge
- Putra Bridge
- Seri Ehsan Bridge
Remaining open: Seri Bestari Bridge and Seri Setia Bridge.

The rehearsal closures start before the weekend
Anyone who works in or commutes through Putrajaya is affected well before the public holiday.
The skeleton rehearsal from 26 to 28/08 closes Persiaran Perdana entirely, from Jalan Kemerdekaan to Lebuh Bestari.
On 28 and 29/08, from 6am to 12 noon, these roads close:

- Jalan P2A
- Jalan P2T
- Jalan P2S
- Jalan P2W
- Jalan P2Y
That is a working Friday morning gone for a large slice of the federal administrative capital. Precinct 2 in particular is effectively boxed in for those hours.
Take the train, seriously
Rapid KL has done the unusual thing and made the alternative genuinely viable.
All Rapid KL rail services — LRT, MRT and the KL Monorail — will operate 24 hours on 30 and 31/08. The Sunway BRT, selected bus routes and Rapid KL On-Demand services run 24 hours across the same period, with frequencies increased on major routes and adjusted to demand.
For the Putrajaya leg specifically:
- Putrajaya Sentral is the arrival hub, on the MRT Putrajaya Line.
- A free shuttle bus runs between Putrajaya Sentral and Dataran Putrajaya, from noon on 30/08 until 2pm on 31/08.
- 103 buses have been deployed for free feeder services along two routes to the celebration venue.
A 24-hour train network is the closest thing Klang Valley gets to a European city weekend, and it exists for precisely two nights a year. If you have ever complained that KL public transport shuts too early, this is the weekend to actually use it — the same principle behind everywhere you can already reach from KL Sentral without a car, just with the last-train excuse removed.
For the KL-side event, Dataran Merdeka is walkable from Masjid Jamek and Pasar Seni, and the surrounding streets are worth arriving early for — the area covered in our KL heritage walk routes is the same ground the celebration sits on.
Cannons, drones and other things worth knowing
A few details that catch people out every year.
The cannons are scheduled. Residents around Putrajaya will hear artillery salutes from Lot 3C1, Precinct 3 — two shots at 8am on 29/08 during the full rehearsal, and fourteen shots at 8am on 31/08. They are part of the official programme. Nothing has exploded.
Drones are banned. Putrajaya is a prohibited area for drone flights from 25 to 31/08. Operators need approval from the relevant authorities, and flying without it can draw action under the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016. The aerial shot is not worth it.
Arrive early and travel light. Police have advised attendees to follow security instructions, avoid bringing prohibited items, watch their belongings, and not park in restricted areas or anywhere obstructing traffic. Crowds at Dataran Putrajaya build from dawn.
