The KLIA Ekspres fare is going up by RM10. From 01/01/2027, a one-way adult ticket from KL Sentral to the airport costs RM65 instead of RM55, according to Express Rail Link (ERL), the operator. For a family of four flying out, that is a noticeable jump.
The fare rise is real, but it is not the only way to the airport. Here is what changes, and six ways to pay less.
What the KLIA Ekspres fare rise changes
ERL announced the revision on 30/09/2026. SoyaCincau published the fare table, and reports describe it as the first revision since 2016. ERL cited higher operating and maintenance costs. CEO Datin Noormah Mohd Noor said the change reflects "the realities of running a high-quality rail service".
| Ticket (KLIA Ekspres) | Until 31/12/2026 | From 01/01/2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Adult, one way | RM55 | RM65 |
| Adult, return | RM100 | RM118 |
| Child 6 to 15, one way | RM25 | RM29 |
| Child 6 to 15, return | RM45 | RM53 |
| Child under 6 | Free | Free |
Some outlets quoted slightly different current child and return fares. The table above follows the figures reproduced by SoyaCincau, which match Lowyat.NET. Check the ERL site before you buy.
KLIA Transit fares rise too. From KL Sentral, the adult fare to Bandar Tasik Selatan goes from RM6.50 to RM7.70, and to Putrajaya/Cyberjaya from RM14.00 to RM16.60.
6 ways to pay less on the way to KLIA
Not every option is faster, and some depend on where you start. Pick by your starting point and your bag count.
1. Book online for 10% off
ERL lists a 10% discount on tickets booked through KLIAekspres.com or its app. If that applies after the revision, RM65 becomes RM58.50. It is the lowest-effort saving.
2. Hold out for partner discounts
ERL says it is working with partners on exclusive ticket discounts of up to 30% from 2027. Details have not been announced. If you are booking a trip for January or later, watch for them before you pay full price.
3. Use a concession fare if you qualify
ERL lists concession fares for senior citizens aged 60 and above, persons with disabilities and eligible students. SoyaCincau lists the KL Sentral to KLIA concession fare at RM45.50, and ERL's own pages mention a 30% MyKad discount.
Bring your MyKad and the right documents. If you are unsure whether you qualify, ask ERL before the day.
4. Take the MRT, then switch at Putrajaya Sentral
ERL's MRT-to-airport guide describes taking the MRT to Putrajaya Sentral, then a one to two minute walk to KLIA Transit. The Transit leg takes about 16 minutes to Terminal 1, and four minutes more to Terminal 2.
ERL's fare table lists one-way fares from MRT stations to KLIA of RM10.60 from Cyberjaya City Centre up to RM13.10 from Sungai Besi, with journey times of 18 to 37 minutes. That table predates the revision, so expect the Transit part to rise.
For how the MRT, LRT and buses work at the gate, see paying for LRT, MRT and buses in KL in 2026.
5. Take an airport bus
Buses run from KL Sentral to KLIA. redBus lists fares from RM13 to RM28, with Aerobus, Airport Coach and Skybus Malaysia as operators. The ride averages about an hour, and redBus puts the average at 1 hour 13 minutes.
According to klia2.info, Airport Coach runs every 30 minutes, 365 days a year, from the lower ground level at the KL Sentral bus station. Service hours run from midnight to 11pm.
Buses are cheaper but slower and exposed to road traffic. Allow extra time if you have a tight check-in.
6. Buy a monthly pass if you commute often
ERL lists a monthly season pass of RM465 for KL Sentral to KLIA, covering 44 trips over 31 days. That works out to about RM10.57 a trip. It only makes sense if you are an airport worker or someone who really does 44 trips a month.
What the rise costs a family
Fare rises hit groups hardest, so here is the arithmetic using the table above.
- Two adults and one child (6 to 15), one way: RM135 now, RM159 from 01/01/2027. That is RM24 more.
- Two adults and two children (6 to 15), one way: RM160 now, RM188 from 01/01/2027. That is RM28 more.
- Two adults and two children, with 10% off online (if it applies): about RM169.20.
For comparison, redBus lists bus fares from RM13 per person. Four people at that starting fare is RM52. Prices differ by operator and time, so treat this as a floor, not a quote.
The trade-off is time and luggage. A train fare buys schedule certainty on a fixed route, while a bus ride depends on the road. If your flight is early, that can matter more than the saving.
Which option fits which trip
Think in terms of the trip, not the price alone.
- Early flight, heavy luggage: KLIA Ekspres or Transit, booked online for the 10% off.
- Student, senior or OKU traveller: Check the concession fare first.
- Starting from the south, near Putrajaya or Cyberjaya: The MRT plus Transit option is built for you.
- Flying out at an odd hour: Check Airport Coach timing. Service hours run from midnight to 11pm.
- Frequent airport trips: The monthly pass is the only route with a clear per-trip saving.
