If you have ever stood at an LRT fare gate holding a perfectly good Visa card and a phone full of e-wallets, only to walk back to the ticket machine for a plastic token, you already know the problem.
Paying for public transport in KL in 2026 depends on which line you are on. KTM Komuter gates take your bank card. Most Rapid KL gates still do not. The new LRT3 prints you a QR ticket. And the fix everyone has been promised since 2023 is, as of Prasarana's latest update, still at the contract stage.
Here is how to pay for LRT, MRT, Monorail, BRT, buses and KTM Komuter today, what each gate actually accepts, and what changes when open payment finally lands.
Why most Rapid KL gates still only take Touch 'n Go
The short answer is age. Prasarana told Malay Mail in May 2026 that Rapid KL's automated fare collection system has run on the Touch 'n Go platform since 1999.
It is a closed-loop system. The gate only recognises Touch 'n Go as a stored-value card, plus single-journey tokens for people paying cash. It was designed before contactless bank cards and phone wallets existed, so it cannot simply "switch on" Visa or Apple Pay.
That is the gap. Your bank card is an open-loop payment instrument. The gate was never built to talk to a bank.

This is the part most guides blur together. Here is the line-by-line picture, based on operator statements and recent reporting.

A few details worth knowing.
Station counters take QR — for tokens and reloads
According to Prasarana, QR code payment is available at all LRT, MRT, Monorail and BRT station counters. That lets you pay with an e-wallet at the counter. It does not let you tap an e-wallet at the gate.
MRT ticket machines take cards and phone wallets
Since January 2025, card terminals on MRT token machines accept credit and debit cards plus Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay. Fintech News Malaysia reported the rollout started at Bukit Bintang and TRX before extending to other MRT stations. You still queue at the machine and still walk away with a token.
LRT3 skipped the plastic token
The Shah Alam Line opened on 29/06/2026 with 20 stations over 37.8 km, from Bandar Utama to Johan Setia. Instead of plastic tokens, cash riders get a printed QR ticket from the vending machine. Touch 'n Go cards and Rapid KL passes work at the gates as usual.
KTM Komuter is the one line already on open payment
KTM Komuter went fully cashless on 01/01/2025 and lets you tap a bank card or phone at the gate. One catch for debit card users: a temporary RM30 pre-authorisation is placed when you tap in, so keep enough balance in the account.
When you will be able to tap your bank card at Rapid KL gates
Prasarana says it is moving to an open payment system covering credit cards, debit cards, QR codes and mobile wallets for tap-in and tap-out across its trains and buses.
The status as of its May 2026 statement: the project was in the final stages of the award process. The clock only starts after the contract is awarded. From that point, Prasarana's stated targets are:
- Rail: 30% of fare gates within 12 months, full rollout within 30 months
- Buses in the Klang Valley: within 15 months
- Coverage: LRT, MRT, Monorail, BRT, Rapid KL buses, MRT feeder buses and Rapid Penang
- Rapid KL On-Demand: may follow a different timeline
Do the maths and even the optimistic case means most stations will not have card-ready gates in 2026. Plan on carrying a Touch 'n Go card for a while yet.
This has been a long road. SoyaCincau's archive traces the promise back to a 2023 announcement by the transport minister, and Rapid KL trialled contactless MyDebit terminals at selected LRT stations years ago without a wide rollout.
My50 and other passes: the cheapest way to pay if you ride daily
If you ride Rapid KL most days, the fare method matters less than the pass.
- My50 costs RM50 a month for unlimited rides on LRT, MRT, BRT, Monorail and Rapid KL buses. It is for Malaysians only.
- Since 01/07/2025, you can buy and renew My50 in the TNG eWallet instead of queuing at a counter.
- From 01/06/2026, the advance purchase option ended. You can no longer buy next month's pass early at counters or in the app.
- Rapid Bulanan is the non-Malaysian equivalent at RM150 a month via TNG eWallet.
- Rapid Kota is the new name for the old MyCity short-term pass, also activated through TNG eWallet.
The practical takeaway: if you commute daily, My50 in the app beats worrying about which gate takes what. If you ride twice a month, a topped-up Touch 'n Go card is still the least friction.

What changes for you when open payment arrives
When card gates do go live, three things will shift.
Tourists and occasional riders win first. Visitors currently have to buy a Touch 'n Go card or queue for tokens. Tapping a home-country card removes that step entirely, which is exactly how KTM Komuter already works.
Your bank statement becomes your trip log. With open payment, each journey shows up as a card transaction. Useful for claiming work travel, less useful if you like privacy.
Watch for pre-authorisation holds. KTM's RM30 debit hold is a preview. Open-loop systems commonly place a temporary hold before settling the real fare. Rapid KL has not announced its own rules, so check the terms when rollout begins.
What probably will not change quickly: Touch 'n Go cards will keep working. Prasarana has described open payment as an addition, and nothing in its statements suggests existing cards are being retired.
