MyDigital ID Is Now Compulsory for JPJ, Immigration and Telcos — Here's What Changed in 2026

MyDigital ID is now the compulsory login for MyJPJ, MyNIISe and telco SIM checks in 2026, with JPJ requiring biometric verification for online vehicle transfers too.

Malaysians have spent years juggling a different login for every government app: one for MyEG, another for MySejahtera, another for whatever JPJ dreamed up that year. MyDigital ID was meant to fix that, and in 2026 it finally started to bite — it's now the compulsory front door to your road tax, your outbound travel, and even your SIM card, with the rollout still spreading agency by agency.

What MyDigital ID Actually Is

MyDigital ID is Malaysia's national digital identity platform, built and run by MyDigital ID Sdn Bhd under the Prime Minister's Department, with oversight from the National Security Council (NSC) and the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA). Think of it as a verification layer, not a new identity card.

It does not replace MyKad. Your physical IC is still the legal document you carry and show at counters. What MyDigital ID does is confirm, in real time, that whoever is logging into an app is genuinely the MyKad holder they claim to be, by matching a live selfie or fingerprint against the National Registration Department's (JPN) database.

It's often compared to Singapore's SingPass: both are single sign-on layers replacing separate government logins with one verified identity. The Malaysian version says it doesn't store personal data on your device or app; each successful check just issues a digital certificate, valid a year, tied to your phone. Only one MyDigital ID account is allowed per person, ever.

Basic Sign-Up vs the Biometric-Verified "Advance" Profile

Registration is free, via the MyDigital ID app on Google Play, the App Store, or Huawei AppGallery. Most people complete it entirely on their phone: an eKYC process scanning your MyKad and matching a selfie against the JPN database.

Prefer doing it in person? Kiosks at NADI and Sentuhan Madani centres let an officer verify your MyKad and take a fingerprint scan. From 12 June 2026, the NSC announced kiosks are being upgraded with real-time facial biometric verification against the JPN database, plus periodic re-verification for existing users, a direct response to rising complaints about identity misuse.

Here's the part that trips people up: a basic sign-up is enough for logging into MyNIISe or checking your SIM registration. But higher-stakes transactions, like fully digital vehicle ownership transfer, need what's commonly described as an Advance profile: your account with facial biometric verification actually completed, not just the bare registration. If an agency says your MyDigital ID isn't "enough," this is usually why.

Where It's Already Required

From 15 January 2026, the Home Ministry made MyDigital ID the sole sign-on for Malaysians using MyNIISe, the immigration app used for outbound QR clearance (foreign travellers are unaffected).

MyJPJ was the big one. JPJ first targeted 1 February 2026 for a sole-login switch; that slipped, and mandatory enforcement actually landed on 1 May 2026 for users aged 12 and above (MyPR holders keep the old password method for now). Within days, JPJ reported roughly seven million users had logged in via MyDigital ID, alongside some early hiccups as the system absorbed the load.

Telcos joined earlier still: from 1 December 2025, operators began integrating MyDigital ID's MyIDverify tech, letting users check which prepaid numbers are registered under their MyKad and tightening new SIM registrations, backed by NACSA and MCMC.

The government's stated target is 17 million registered users by end-2026, en route to folding 95 percent of public services into the system by 2030.

The Pindah Milik Wrinkle

Vehicle ownership transfer, pindah milik, is where this gets interesting. Since 2026, the whole process can be done digitally through MyJPJ: the seller applies, the buyer confirms within seven days, both sides complete a biometric selfie, and the registry updates without a counter visit. But this route requires that Advance, biometric-verified profile from both buyer and seller.

Then, on 25 May 2026, JPJ abruptly suspended all online ownership transfers nationwide, across MySikap, kiosks, MyEG and eAuto, after complaints about vehicles transferred without the registered owner's knowledge, telling the Transport Ministry the system had been abused. Within hours, Transport Minister Anthony Loke had it restored, asking JPJ to schedule future upgrades over long weekends instead.

That whiplash is basically MyDigital ID's 2026 in miniature: convenience rolling out faster than the fraud-proofing meant to support it, with agencies patching the gap in near real time.

What This Actually Means For You

Register now rather than during the next deadline crunch — MyJPJ's chaotic first week of May showed what happens when millions onboard at once. Buying or selling a car? Confirm both parties have the biometric-verified profile, not just a basic account, before assuming the online route will work. Our step-by-step pindah milik guide covers the paperwork either way. And if your MyKad photo no longer looks like you, sort that out first — facial verification will keep failing otherwise; see our MyKad renewal guide.

FAQ

Does MyDigital ID replace my MyKad?

No. It's an online verification layer only. You still need your physical MyKad for in-person transactions, and the platform says it doesn't store your personal data itself.

Is MyDigital ID compulsory for everyone right now?

Not universally, but it's compulsory agency by agency: MyJPJ (users 18 and above) since 1 May 2026, MyNIISe for outbound Malaysians since 15 January 2026, and it's embedded in telco SIM verification since 1 December 2025.

What is this "Advance" profile people mention for car transfers?

A MyDigital ID account with facial biometric verification actually completed, which JPJ requires for higher-stakes online transactions like fully digital ownership transfer, a step beyond basic registration.

What happens if I miss a deadline?

You get locked out of that specific app until you register, as MyJPJ users found when the original February 2026 target slipped and enforcement kicked in on 1 May instead.

Where exactly do I sign up?

Download the MyDigital ID app (Google Play, App Store, or Huawei AppGallery) for online eKYC, or visit a NADI or Sentuhan Madani kiosk for in-person verification.
