The good news: you can renew road tax online in Malaysia in 2026 through JPJ's own MyJPJ app or the mySIKAP portal in a few minutes flat — as long as you get one thing sorted first, which is your motor insurance.
This guide walks through the exact steps, in order, plus what happens if your roadtax has already expired.
The golden rule: insurance before road tax
JPJ's system checks your vehicle's insurance electronically before it will issue your Lesen Kenderaan Motor (LKM) — the official name for what everyone calls roadtax. Per JPJ's own motor vehicle licence renewal guide, "the vehicle must have insurance coverage for the period of LKM applied for." No active motor insurance or takaful policy, no LKM. Full stop.
So the order is always the same: renew (or buy) your motor insurance or takaful first, then renew your roadtax. Since your LKM runs for either six or twelve months, your insurance needs to cover that same stretch too.

Step 1: Sort out your insurance or takaful first
Renew through your existing insurer, a comparison platform, or a broker — whichever's fastest. The important part isn't where you buy it, it's that the new policy is active and covers a full 6 or 12 months before you touch the JPJ system. Wait too long after your insurance kicks in to renew your roadtax, and you risk your cover note no longer matching a full 12-month LKM period.
Step 2: Renew your roadtax on the MyJPJ app
JPJ's official FAQ on e-LKM renewal spells out the process inside the app. Once your insurance is active:

Open MyJPJ and log in with your JPJeID.

Head to the roadtax (LKM) menu, key in your vehicle registration number, and tap Hantar (Submit).

Check that your vehicle details are correct, then tap Pembaharuan (Renewal).

Since JPJ began rolling out digital roadtax for individual private vehicles in February 2023, most owners no longer need to print or display a physical LKM sticker — your e-LKM simply lives in the app instead.

Payment-wise, JPJ's gateway runs through Maybank, but local debit and credit cards from any bank are accepted. Renewing digitally doesn't cost extra — JPJ's own FAQ confirms the roadtax fee itself is unchanged whether you renew online or at a counter; what you pay still depends on your vehicle's usual rate.
If your road tax has already expired
Driving with an expired roadtax is an offence in Malaysia, so don't sit on it. For most private cars and motorcycles:

Expired less than three years: renew it as normal — sort out insurance first, then renew through any channel above. No inspection required.

Expired more than three years: JPJ requires a PUSPAKOM inspection (or a PG10 check for motorcycles) before it will issue a new LKM.
Commercial vehicles need a PUSPAKOM inspection regardless of how long the tax has lapsed.
