If your child is about to turn 12, it is time to think about their first MyKad. The rule from the National Registration Department (JPN) is simple: apply within 30 days of the 12th birthday, and it costs nothing. Miss that window and a processing fee applies.
This guide covers who must apply, what to bring, the steps at the counter and what a late application costs. It follows JPN's own service page for the MyKad application for children aged 12 (JPN).
Who needs to apply for a MyKad at 12?
The application is for children who have turned 12 and are under 16. JPN sets the timing as within 30 days of reaching the age of 12. Our guide to registering a newborn's birth certificate and MyKid covers the earlier step.
What documents to bring
JPN asks for originals. Bring the following.
For the child (applicant):
- Birth, adoption or citizenship certificate (original)
- Passport, if the applicant is a non-resident
For the parent or sponsor:
- Identity card (original)
- Passport, if the sponsor is not a citizen
- For a guardian with no family relation to the child: a statutory declaration and a letter from the Social Welfare Department
If the child's address differs from the sponsor's:
- A utility bill (electricity, water or sewerage) or property assessment tax bill, or an equivalent document. JPN accepts the original or a certified copy.
Step-by-step: applying at JPN
- Note the 12th birthday. Your 30-day free window starts on that date.
- Gather the originals listed above.
- Go together. The child and the sponsor must visit in person.
- Go to any JPN counter. JPN states that you can apply at any NRD counter.
- Fill in Form JPN.KP01. The form is available at the counter.
- Submit the documents and wait for JPN to process the application.
JPN's page does not detail appointment booking, photo requirements or biometrics. Check with your local JPN branch before you go so you know what to expect on the day.
How much does it cost?
Applications made within 30 days of the 12th birthday are free. For late applications, JPN's page lists a RM10 processing fee, charged per year of age up to 16. Given the fee, it is worth marking the date on the calendar early.
What if the MyKad gets lost?
That is a separate process, with its own fee and paperwork. See our guide on replacing a lost MyKad. If the address on the card changes later, the change of address guide walks through it.
