Marrying a Malaysian does not give your spouse the right to live here. It gives them the right to apply, and the gap between those two sentences has cost a lot of couples a lot of unnecessary trips to Putrajaya.
The pass they need is the Long Term Social Visit Pass, usually shortened to LTSVP. This is what it is, what Immigration asks for, and the three parts most guides skip.
One caveat up front: requirements change, and the Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia reserves the right to ask for additional documents. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice, and confirm the current checklist with Immigration before you file.
What the LTSVP Actually Is
According to the Immigration Department's own page, the LTSVP is issued to foreign nationals for temporary residence in Malaysia for a minimum period of six months.
For the foreign husband or wife of a Malaysian citizen, two things make it the pass worth having.
It may be granted for up to five years, subject to approval and continued compliance with the conditions.
And the holder is permitted to work, run a business, or take professional employment without converting to an Employment Pass or a Visitor's Pass for temporary employment.
That second point is the one people underestimate. It removes the need for an employer to sponsor a work pass, which is the single biggest practical barrier a foreign spouse otherwise faces in the local job market.
Before You Apply: The Social Visit Pass Trap
Here is the step that catches people, and it is worth reading twice.
An LTSVP can only be issued to someone who is already holding a valid Social Visit Pass or a Special Pass. It is not a pass you apply for from outside the system — it is an upgrade to a status you already hold.
If the existing Social Visit Pass has expired, Immigration will typically issue a fresh one before considering the LTSVP. In some cases applicants have been asked to leave the country and re-enter on a new Social Visit Pass first, as noted in Family Frontiers' community guide for binational families.
Plan the timing around this. Turning up on the last valid day of a pass is how a straightforward application becomes a two-month problem.
The Documents Immigration Asks For
The application must be submitted by the applicant together with the Malaysian citizen spouse. Both of you, in person. Originals for verification, photocopies for submission.
For the "husband or wife to citizen" category, Immigration's published checklist includes:
- Form Imm.12 or Imm.55
- Form Imm.38
- Copy of the marriage certificate
- Copy of any child's birth certificate
- A recent affidavit confirming the marriage exists and is still valid
- A Security Bond form, stamped with a RM10 revenue stamp
- The Malaysian sponsor spouse's identity card
- Proof of the sponsor spouse's income
- Copy of the sponsor spouse's passport
- Wedding photographs
Community guides list further items state offices have asked for in practice — a sponsor declaration letter, proof of residential address, recent bank statements, passport photographs for both spouses. Those come from applicant experience rather than published policy, so treat them as preparation, not a legal minimum.
Two things trip people up. The affidavit must be affirmed before a Commissioner for Oaths. And a marriage registered overseas needs to be recognised in Malaysia first, which is a separate JPN process with its own queue.
If there are children, sort the birth certificate and MyKid registration early rather than discovering mid-application that one is still pending.
Working on an LTSVP Is a Separate Endorsement
This is the second thing most guides compress into one line, and it deserves more.
The right to work comes with the pass, but it is not automatic on day one. Permission to work or run a business has to be recorded and endorsed in the pass by the Director General of Immigration or an authorised officer. Until that endorsement is in the passport, the permission is theoretical.
Immigration's checklist for the work endorsement includes a letter of offer on company letterhead, an employment contract stamped with a RM10 revenue stamp setting out position, duration, monthly salary and both signatures, an information form covering applicant, spouse and employer, and a current company registration printout from the MyData SSM system.
You can apply for the endorsement at the same time as the LTSVP, or later once you have a job offer. It is submitted at the Visa, Pass and Permit Division in the state where the applicant will be employed. If you are checking that a prospective employer is a real, registered entity before handing over documents, the SSM search is the place to start.
Naziran: The Part Nobody Warns You About
The Immigration Department runs a verification activity it calls Naziran, and it is described plainly on the official page.
Naziran exists to confirm that holders of immigration facilities are actually complying with the conditions attached to them. In practice it can involve visits to the registered address or premises, direct observation, interviews with relevant parties, and a review of documents already submitted to the Department.
The findings feed back into decisions on approval and extension.
Nothing there should alarm a couple in a genuine marriage. But keep your registered address current with Immigration, and keep it consistent across agencies — mismatches between your pass, your MyKad records and your utility bills create questions that take time to answer.
Renewing and Extending
The pass is renewable, and applicants are generally advised to start about three months before expiry rather than in the final weeks.
Extensions for foreign spouses can be lodged through the ePLSI online portal, though original documents still need to be produced for verification and only complete applications are accepted. Both spouses are expected to be present.
One published exception worth knowing: for nationals of China and African countries, the completed application is directed to Immigration Headquarters in Putrajaya rather than a state office.
FAQ
How long is a Long Term Social Visit Pass valid for a spouse?
It is issued for a minimum of six months and may be granted for up to five years for the foreign husband or wife of a Malaysian citizen, subject to approval and compliance with the conditions.
Can a foreign spouse work on an LTSVP?
Yes. The pass permits paid employment, business or professional work without converting to an Employment Pass, but the permission must be endorsed in the pass by Immigration, and the endorsement has its own document checklist.
Does the Malaysian spouse need to be present at the application?
Yes. Immigration states that the application must be submitted by the applicant together with the Malaysian citizen spouse, and the same expectation applies to extensions.
What is Naziran?
Naziran is Immigration's compliance verification activity. It can include visits to your registered address or premises, observation, interviews and document review, and its findings are used when considering approvals and extensions.
When should the pass be renewed?
Start roughly three months before the expiry date. Extensions can be lodged through the ePLSI portal, but originals still need to be presented and incomplete applications are not processed.
